This nontechnical verse-by-verse commentary analyzes four epistles: 1 and 2 Timothy, Titus, and Philemon. In addition, it provides introductions to the various contexts surrounding each epistle, and addresses the wisdom Paul imparts on the leaders of the first-century church.

“false doctrines” that were being taught (verse 3). The false doctrines were coming in the attractive package of myths and genealogies. The words devote themselves to is translated by other writers as “pay attention to,” “give heed to,” “occupy their minds with.” The Greek word does not refer to casual listening but rather “an attaching oneself to” what is heard. It means to accept and affirm it, and then be committed to it. However, getting attached to a different doctrine begins by casual listening.
